Springtime Gardens
Hampton Historic Site and Ladew Topiary Gardens

Tuesday, May 5, 2009
The blossoming of May’s spring flowers marks the best time of year to visit two famous Maryland homes and gardens. The Hampton Historic Estate, a 33-room mansion built between 1783 and 1790, is the largest and most ornate Georgian house in America. When the Marquis de Lafayette visited this grand home, he marveled at the beauty of the architecture, art and antique treasures. The surrounding landscaped grounds and formal gardens represent 18th-Century landscape design.

The Garden Club of America calls Ladew Topiary Gardens “the most outstanding topiary garden in America.” Harvey S. Ladew planned the gardens to provide an array of color, texture and form for each season. The highlight of the gardens — the topiary garden — displays trees and shrubs trained and trimmed into ornamental shapes. We also will tour the Ladew house, including the famous Oval Library, which was featured in the book 100 Most Beautiful Rooms in America.

We will have lunch at a charming historic inn amidst the beautiful Maryland countryside. Treat yourself, bring a friend and enjoy a spectacular day in the gardens of Maryland. Wear comfortable shoes and be prepared to do a lot of walking.

7032.390 • $158 per person/$133 McLean district residents, includes deluxe motor coach transportation, admission to houses and gardens, lunch, morning snacks and a driver’s tip. Arrive at 8 a.m. Bus departs promptly at 8:15 a.m. Tour will return at approximately 6:30 p.m. Please make checks payable to Excursionaire.
